Each mountain guide must go through a rigorous selection process for admission to education, followed by several years of education with a series of exams. He has a basic knowledge of geology, fauna, flora and history. Once licensed, he or she is required to participate in a biennial license renewal examination. Possesses a UIAGM membership card with a valid membership stamp.
Mountain guides are hired by clients who would not be able to manage a mountain tour on their own and prefer professional guidance in the mountain terrain. There is an objective risk in every mountain. Mountain guides are trained to reduce this objective risk to a minimum. They help the client to choose the right hike and act as a coach during the guided hike. They enhance the technical and physical capabilities of their clients.
